Favourite running shoes?

"La Sportiva Mutant II at the moment."

Favourite Running Socks?

"Salomon Running Socks s/lab or compress crew socks for ultra running."

Favourite 10km?

"The last 10km of an ultra. I love it. You know you are going to make it home no matter how long it may take you and you can start counting down the 10km!"

Favourite Half Marathon?

"It was a boring out and back route but the setting was amazing at Annecy Half Marathon in France. I love it over there."

Favourite Marathon?

"I really really loved my first ever marathon which was London in 2021. It was a mind blowing experience but I also really loved the marathon stage on day 5 of the Cape Wrath Ultra."

What stops you going for a run?

"Only an injury!"

Worst issue with feet in a race?

"Historically it would have to be Marathon des Sables 2023. The heat wave meant a lot more walking than I trained for (rather than running). I took the skin off the soles of my feet. Generally I have to be careful with a couple of toes that are ‘clawed’ and so I always lose the toenails off them in any longer races."

Recommended pre-run foot care routine?

"3 months out from a big ultra I’ll start paying more attention to my feet. Using a really good balm at night to hydrate, moisturise and soften the feet is super important. Getting rid of any dead skin and paying attention to common pressure points. Training in the trainers and socks combo that I’ll be wearing. About 10 days out I do my final nail clip and pre-race/long run I preventatively tape up all my toes with hypafix. I am a type 1 diabetic so do need to pay extra attention. But I believe everyone should be doing this anyway. Blisters are avoidable. If I need extra help I’ll get in some appointments with a chiropodist/podiatrist."

Post-run foot care routine?

"Take all the tape off. Thoroughly clean. Treat any blisters or rub. Try to air to dry.

If it is post a short run then thoroughly cleaning and drying and inspecting feet is now a habit."

How do you deal with wet shoes?

"If I can I’ll rinse the mud off, stuff them with newspaper and leave them somewhere warm to dry.

Making sure they are clean and washed out on the inside is super important. If they are wet the next time I put them on then I don’t worry about it- as long as there is no grit inside!"
